Walk to unlock: an iPhone app that locks your apps until you walk
Schlep is a walk to unlock app for iPhone. It locks the apps you pick, like TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, Reddit and games. Your steps unlock them, 10 minutes at a time. It runs on Apple's Screen Time system, so the lock is the same one iOS uses for its own app limits.
How it works
- Pick the apps to lock in Apple's picker. You can pick single apps or whole categories.
- Walk. Every step counts from the first one. There is no daily goal to clear.
- Open a locked app and spend 10 minutes from its lock screen, or from the Home tab in Schlep.
Questions
- How many steps does it take to unlock an app?
- By default, 1,000 steps earns 10 minutes on your locked apps. The Easier rate gives 15 minutes per 1,000 steps and the Strict rate gives 5. Easy mode also starts each day with 30 free minutes; Hard mode starts at zero. You can change both in Settings > Difficulty.
- How is this different from Screen Time limits?
- Apple's Screen Time limits have an Ignore Limit button. Schlep's lock screen asks for steps instead. Ignore Limit is one tap away. A thousand steps are not.
- What does it cost?
- $9.99 a month or $29.99 a year, billed by Apple. You can cancel in your iPhone's subscription settings at any time.
- Can Schlep see my steps or which apps I use?
- Your step count stays on your iPhone. It is sent to us only if you send a diagnostic report yourself (Settings > Help > Apps not locking? > Send diagnostics, or a test build's Share diagnostics switch). Schlep can't see which apps you use or for how long: Apple gives it tokens it can't read. The privacy policy lists everything the app does send.
- Why is it called Schlep?
- Schlep is the Yiddish word for dragging yourself somewhere.
