How to lock TikTok until you walk
Locking TikTok until you walk takes an app that locks TikTok and a way to count your steps. Schlep is an iPhone app that does both. You pick TikTok, and your steps unlock it, 10 minutes of TikTok at a time.
Set it up for TikTok
- Install Schlep from the App Store. It costs $9.99 a month or $29.99 a year, billed by Apple. There is no free version.
- Allow Screen Time access when Schlep asks. The lock runs on Apple's Screen Time system, so the app needs that permission. Allow access to your steps in Apple Health too, so your walking counts.
- Pick TikTok in Apple's picker. You can pick single apps or whole categories, and the apps you pick lock right away.
- Walk. Every step counts from the first one. There is no daily goal to clear.
- Open TikTok. Its lock screen shows your balance. Spend 10 minutes from there, or from the Home tab in Schlep. If you are short on steps, the lock screen tells you how many more it takes.
To lock Instagram, YouTube or Reddit the same way, tick them in the same picker.
What 1,000 steps buys on TikTok
Schlep has three rates. At the default, Recommended, 1,000 steps earns 10 minutes on your locked apps, which is 10 minutes of TikTok. That is 100 steps for each minute of TikTok. A normal walking pace is about 100 steps a minute.
| Rate | Minutes of TikTok per 1,000 steps | Steps for 30 minutes of TikTok |
|---|---|---|
| Easier | 15 | 2,000 |
| Recommended | 10 | 3,000 |
| Strict | 5 | 6,000 |
Easy mode starts each day with 30 free minutes on your locked apps. Hard mode starts at zero. You change the rate and the mode in Settings > Difficulty. You spend minutes 10 at a time. A 10-minute block only counts down while you are inside a locked app, and it ends an hour after you spend it. Unspent minutes do not roll over past midnight.
Free options
Apple's own App Limit is built into iOS and costs nothing. On iOS 26 and earlier, go to Settings > Screen Time > App Limits, tap Add Limit, open a category and select TikTok. It caps the minutes you spend in TikTok each day and does not count steps. Apple's iPhone guide says that by default, Screen Time limits can be ignored once reached. What the Ignore Limit button does, and what stops it, is in what Ignore Limit does in iPhone Screen Time.
Steppin is a free app that also locks apps until you walk. Its rate is 100 steps for 1 minute of app time, and you can change the goal. How Schlep compares with Steppin and the other apps like it: walk to unlock apps for iPhone, compared.
Questions
- Is there an app that makes you walk to use TikTok?
- Yes. Schlep locks TikTok, or any app you pick, on your iPhone until you walk. By default, 1,000 steps earns 10 minutes on your locked apps. Steppin is a free app that does the same with its own rate.
- How many steps does it take to unlock TikTok?
- In Schlep, 1,000 steps earns 10 minutes of TikTok at the default rate. The Easier rate gives 15 minutes per 1,000 steps and the Strict rate gives 5. Easy mode starts each day with 30 free minutes on your locked apps. Hard mode starts at zero.
- How do I block TikTok on my iPhone without an app?
- Use Apple's App Limit in Settings > Screen Time > App Limits on iOS 26 and earlier. It is free and limits TikTok by time, not steps. Apple's iOS 27 guide uses Time Allowances in place of App Limits.
- Does Schlep work on Android or iPad?
- No. Schlep is for iPhone, running iOS 17 or later.
- Can Schlep see what I do on TikTok?
- Schlep can't see which apps you use or for how long: Apple gives it tokens it can't read. Your step count stays on your iPhone unless you send a diagnostic report yourself.
